Liability & Insurance
Every move we perform includes basic valuation coverage at no charge. Full-value protection is also available — and we recommend it for anything you couldn't easily replace. This page explains exactly what's covered, what isn't, and how our claims process works.

Coverage overview
As a licensed Colorado and federal motor carrier, Summit Moving Pros is required by law to carry specific insurance coverage. We carry more than the minimum — including a $2,000,000 commercial general liability policy that goes well beyond the industry standard.
Our insurance program has three layers that apply to your move:
- Business insurance: protects our company, our trucks, and our employees
- Cargo insurance: covers the goods in transit during your move
- Valuation protection: covers your items against damage or loss, and is selected by you before the move
Basic valuation (free)
Every move we perform automatically includes basic valuation coverage at no additional charge. This is the minimum level of protection required by Colorado law for licensed household goods movers.
How it works
Basic valuation pays a fixed rate of $0.60 per pound, per item, up to a maximum aggregate liability of $2,000 per shipment.
What that looks like in practice
| Item | Weight | Basic payout if damaged | Real-world value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55" OLED TV | 40 lbs | $24 | $1,800 |
| Dining table (solid oak) | 90 lbs | $54 | $1,200 |
| Floor lamp (ceramic base) | 20 lbs | $12 | $300 |
| Marble coffee table | 150 lbs | $90 | $1,600 |
| Grand piano | 800 lbs | $480 | $15,000+ |
As you can see, basic valuation is fine for everyday items — towels, kitchenware, books. It's completely insufficient for electronics, furniture, artwork, instruments, or anything with meaningful value.
Full-value protection
Full-value protection (sometimes called "full replacement value" or "FVP") covers your items at their actual fair market value — not by weight. If a $1,800 TV is destroyed, you get $1,800 (or a replacement of equivalent value), not $24.
How it works
- You select full-value protection before the move begins
- You declare the total value of your shipment (or accept our standard valuation based on inventory)
- Cost is typically 2–4% of the total declared value, added to your move price
- If an item is damaged, you can choose repair or cash replacement at fair market value
- No per-pound cap; no aggregate $2,000 cap
Typical cost examples
| Declared value | Coverage cost | Example shipment |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | $250–$400 | Studio or 1BR apartment |
| $30,000 | $750–$1,200 | 2BR apartment or small home |
| $75,000 | $1,875–$3,000 | 3BR home with electronics and furniture |
| $150,000+ | Quoted individually | 4+ BR home, art, instruments, antiques |
For items valued over $50,000 individually — or for high-value collections such as wine, art, or instruments — we can also add a specific item rider through our carrier at cost. Ask your coordinator for details.
Compare coverage tiers
Here's a side-by-side look at what each tier actually covers:
Basic Valuation
Standard industry minimum, required by Colorado law. Pays by weight, not value.
- $0.60 per pound per item
- $2,000 maximum total coverage
- No deductible
- Covers physical damage in transit
- Does not cover customer-packed boxes for internal damage
Full-Value Protection
Covers items at their actual fair market value. What you'd actually want if something goes wrong.
- Repair or replacement at fair market value
- No per-pound cap
- No aggregate limit (based on declared value)
- No deductible
- Covers customer-packed items for external damage
- Individual item riders available over $50K
Business insurance
Beyond cargo and valuation, Summit Moving Pros carries comprehensive business insurance to protect our operations and your move. These policies apply regardless of which valuation tier you select.
| Policy | Coverage limit | What it protects |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial general liability | $2,000,000 per occurrence | Property damage to your home or building caused by our crew (walls, doorways, floors, elevators) |
| Commercial auto liability | $1,000,000 combined single limit | Damage caused by our trucks while operating in transit |
| Cargo insurance | Per FMCSA and CO PUC requirements | Goods in transit (as required by federal and state law) |
| Workers' compensation | Full statutory coverage | Injuries to our employees while on your job |
| Umbrella policy | $5,000,000 | Additional layer on top of general and auto liability |
What's not covered
No moving company can cover everything, and any mover that tells you otherwise isn't being honest. These items and situations are excluded from both basic valuation and full-value protection:
Items you packed yourself
If we didn't pack the box, we can't know what was inside it or how well it was protected. Customer-packed boxes are covered for external damage (if we dropped the box, we pay for the box and its declared contents), but not for internal breakage caused by inadequate packing.
Internal mechanical or electrical damage
If a TV powers on but shows a cracked screen, we cover it. If it turns on fine and dies two months later, we don't — that's a manufacturer or age issue, not a move issue.
Pre-existing conditions
We're not responsible for damage to items that were already compromised — dry-rotted wood, cracked marble, loose hardware, worn upholstery, or already-failing mechanisms.
Cash, jewelry, and documents
These should never be packed on a moving truck. If you choose to ship them with us, they must be declared and documented in advance, and coverage is limited.
Prohibited and hazardous items
Flammables, ammunition, explosives, and other prohibited items are not covered and cannot legally be transported. See Section 8 of our Terms of Service for the full list.
Consequential damages
We do not cover indirect or consequential damages — including loss of use, loss of business income, temporary housing, or missed appointments caused by a delayed move.
Items you moved yourself
Anything transported in your personal vehicle or by a third party is not covered by our valuation protection.
How to file a claim
If something is damaged or missing after your move, contact us as soon as possible. We take claims seriously and we resolve them quickly — most are completed within 7 business days.
What you'll need
- Your move date and booking reference (if you have it)
- Your full name and the address we delivered to
- A description of each damaged or missing item
- Photographs of the damage, ideally with the item in the room where it was placed
- Any receipts, appraisals, or values you have for the items
Where to send it
- Email: [email protected]
- Phone: (303) 893-8200
- Mail: Summit Moving Pros LLC, Attn: Claims, 745 Lipan Street, Denver, CO 80204

Claims process
Here's exactly what happens after you submit a claim. No black boxes, no runaround.
-
You contact us
Email, phone, or mail — whatever works for you. We log the claim the same day and assign it to the coordinator who handled your original move.
-
We acknowledge within 24 hours
You receive a written confirmation that we've received your claim, along with the name and direct phone number of the person handling it.
-
We review and validate
We compare your report against our pre-move condition documentation, our loading photographs, and our delivery records. If we need more information, we ask for it in one call — not five emails.
-
We make a determination
You receive a written decision within 7 business days. If the claim is approved, we offer repair or replacement (your choice) at the value covered under your plan — basic valuation or full-value protection.
-
Repair or payment
For repairs: we coordinate directly with a vendor and pay them. For replacement or cash settlement: payment is issued by check or ACH within 5 business days of your acceptance.
-
Appeal if needed
If you disagree with our determination, you can request a written review by our general manager within 30 days. We respond within 15 business days.
Certificates of insurance
If your building, landlord, HOA, or commercial client requires proof of our insurance before your move, we can provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) on request.
How to request a COI
- Email [email protected]
- Include the name and address of the certificate holder
- Include any additional-insured or waiver-of-subrogation requirements
